Fourth anniversary of US military withdrawal from Afghanistan
Today, 31 August, marks the fourth anniversary of the withdrawal of the last US troops from Afghanistan, bringing an end to two decades of American military presence in the country.
The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and maintained forces there for 20 years — a period marked by airstrikes, violence, and heavy civilian casualties. Persistent Afghan resistance eventually forced the US and NATO to complete their pull-out on 30 August 2021.
The event is remembered as the third major defeat of global powers in Afghanistan over the past century — a withdrawal achieved, officials and observers note, through the sacrifices and resilience of the Afghan people.
