Pakistan Spent Millions on Lobbyists Close to Donald Trump to Gain Trade Favors and Direct Access
Pakistan has reportedly spent millions of dollars hiring lobbyists connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump in order to secure special trade privileges and direct access to him.
According to The New York Times, Pakistan paid large sums to influence U.S. policy in its favor. In an effort to outmaneuver its neighbor India, Pakistan signed expensive lobbying contracts with Washington-based firms earlier this year.
The report states that these lobbying efforts led the Trump administration, within weeks, to grant Pakistan special tariff exemptions for its exports.
It is also noted that Pakistan spent three times more than India on lobbying in the United States, hiring individuals close to Trump — including his former business partners, advisers, and even a former personal bodyguard.
Among other moves to attract Trump’s attention were Pakistan’s claims that he had ordered a ceasefire with India and proposals to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
However, the question remains whether this strategy will yield long-term benefits for Pakistan’s relations with the United States.
