Construction Project of a Water Check Dam Launched in Gulran District of Herat
The construction of a water check dam has begun in Gulran district of Herat, implemented by the Afghan Red Crescent Society with financial support from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Officials from the Afghan Red Crescent in Herat said, the project is being carried out under the program “Climate-Smart Agriculture” and is estimated to cost around 12.5 million AFN in total.
Mawlawi Ahmad Rashid, head of the Afghan Red Crescent representation in the province, said the project will be implemented in two phases. Currently, 32 skilled and unskilled workers—most of them recent returnees from Iran are employed in the construction work.
He added, that in the second phase, pistachio saplings will be distributed to 200–300 farmers, along with cash assistance to support their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the district governor of Gulran noted that the project will play a significant role in irrigating agricultural land and increasing the groundwater level of wells.
