Inauguration of Two Major Electricity Projects in Gereshk
Yesterday, in Gereshk district of Helmand province, ceremonies were held to inaugurate a 4.8-megawatt electricity generation plant and an 80-kilometer electricity transmission line extending from Sangin district to Kandahar’s Meywand district.
At the event, Dr. Abdul Bari Omar, Director General of the Electricity Department, stated that the first key project involves the construction of a strong 80-kilometer power line from Sangin to Lashkargah Durahi and onward to Meywand, with an estimated cost of around 90 million Afghanis.
He added that the second major project, the Gereshk hydroelectric plant, has a generation capacity of 4.8 megawatts and cost 38 million USD, and is now officially operational.
Meanwhile, Hafiz Hedayatullah Mohammad, head of Helmand’s electricity department, noted that during the current year (2025), numerous electricity projects for the province’s districts have been approved, including power line extensions to Kajaki, Musa Qala, Sangin, Nahr-e-Saraj, Babaji, and several other districts.
